Course Title: BASIC SECURITY SUPERVISORY COURSE
Description:
This course has been conceptualized to develop potential leaders and supervisors in the security industry. The Law mandates that before a Security Guard or Private Detective could be appointed or designated to a supervisory position. He/she should first satisfactorily finish this course, as mandated by Section 5(b) of the Revised Rules and Regulations of the Republic Act No. 5487 (An act governing the Organization and Management of Private Security Agencies, Company Guard Forces and Government Guard Forces). The course will focus on the different concepts, principles, practices and techniques of management, supervision and leadership. It is conceive to guide the students understand their basic and functions as an effective and efficient Leader.
Objectives:
1. To upgrade the knowledge and skills of security guards and prepare them for a higher responsibility as security supervisors
2. To uplift the students on the essential know-how of leadership and supervision to enable them to act as effective and efficient security supervisors.
Duration: 48 hours of instruction: eight (8) hours a day for 6 days
Methodology: Lectures, discussions, demonstration, role-playing, individual and a group exercises, and case studies
PROGRAM OF INSTRUCTIONS
Module I – GENERAL SUBJECTS (16 HRS)
Course Orientation – 1 Hr
An overview of the course will provide to students, to give them idea on what they expect on the training, the five modules of the course. Namely: the general subjects, the legal aspects of security, the fundamentals of security supervision, the supervisory techniques and skills, and the evaluation of the examination, will be discussed, and finally emphasis on the main goals and objectives of the course.
Physical Security Planning- 3 Hrs
Terms defines; a review of the scope of physical security system will be made, to include the types of physical security barriers; perimeter protection; protective alarm; security communications; system of control and identification; areas of control; guard force operational system; objectives and purpose of the planning; principles and techniques in planning; procedure; procedure or steps in effective planning; the content of the plan; and the format.
Public/Community Relations Value Formation – 4 Hrs
Terms defined; objectives and importance of maintaining and promoting good public relations or community relations; principles; principles and techniques of public/community relations, relations with the security industry; among security agencies; between the security force and the community; involvement in community civic projects related to security; and how to formulate a good public/community relations program. Values terms defined; emphasis on re-invigorating the moral values and principles of a leader worthy to be emulated by the subordinates.
Basic Invest. Procedure/Effective Communication & Practical Report Writing – 4 Hrs
The basic investigative procedure will be reviewed with emphasis on practical application and illustrative examples; principles; techniques; and procedures of investigation; tools of investigators; information gathering; interview and interrogation; instrumentation; questioning techniques; evidence or facts needed to complete an investigation report format. Terms defined; elements, process and skills in providing the management an accurate detail of post-to post reports incidents, and all concerns that call for an appropriate action covering by the office, i.e., weekly, monthly reports.
Module II – LEGAL ASPECTS OF SECURITY (4HRS)
Review of RA 5487, as amended – 2 hrs
Term defined; brief historical background; scope and purposes of the Act, salient provisions; reason for the amendments; various infractions/violations of the act and their penalties; powers, duties, and responsibilities of security guards.
Article11, Revised Penal code (RPC) Other selected provisions/Common crime;
Bill of Rights – 4 hrs
Importance of knowing article eleven (11) of the Revised Penal Code in relation to security guards functions; Art. 11 pertains to justifying circumstances for one not to incur criminal liability; elements of self-defense; elements of defense of relatives, elements of defense of stranger, person avoiding an evil or injury, fulfillment of a duty, all legal defined and explained ;an illustrative examples or definitions, elements and penalties, Due Process, Constitutional Rights of an individual/Accused
Module III – FUNDAMENTALS OF SECURITY SUPERVISION (13 Hrs)
Security Management – 3 hrs
Terms defined; fundamental concepts and principles of management; management functions; setting goals and objectives planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, controlling, monitoring, implementation, providing resources, and evaluation; applying the principles of management to security administration.
Development of Leadership – 2 hrs
Leadership defined; principles and techniques of leadership, types of leadership; essential traits of leaders by example; leadership roles; problem –solving by leaders; and indications of good leadership.
Supervisor’s Role in Security management – 3 hrs
Terms defined; roles of supervisors from the management point of view; roles of supervisor from the subordinate’s point of view; personal characteristics of a good supervisor; techniques of security supervision.
Guards Supervision, Principles and Practices – 3 hrs
The practical application of the principles of guard’s supervision will be discussed and illustrated by examples: work planning visitation/inspection of guards, record-keeping; visit to clients, Supervisor’s attitude, investigating complaints or incidents, reporting to management and security guard evaluation, case studies.
Problems in Supervisions – 2 hrs
Common problems in security supervision will be discussed through case study method; job adjustment; giving orders; friction between employees, personnel.
Module IV- SUPERVISORY TECHNIQUES AND SKILLS (9 HRS)
Supervisors as Trainer: How to Teach and Train - 22 -3 hrs
The role of a supervisor as trainer to his security guards will be discussed and emphasized; the principles of learning discussed; motivation of students, learning by doing, learning by association, lerarning by repetition, putting learning to effective use , and incidental learning; techniques of teaching, training methodology;and categories of guard training that supervisors should impart: basic training, orientation on company policies and rules and break-in training.
Problem Solving Decision making- 3 hrs
Problem solving techniques discussed: clearly defining the problem(s), gathering of information, developing solutions, selecting the best practical solution, putting the solution into operation, and evaluating the effectiveness of solution; the decision- making processed discussed: act of science, pitfalls in decision- making, and factors affecting a decision: steps in decision-making process: analyzing the problem or situation, consideration of all possible options/solutions and alternatives, arriving at the best option (the decision), putting the decision into action, evaluation: teaching points will be highlighted in case studies of illustrative examples.
Terms defined, the subject tends to develop potential leaders ability and skill to become the trouble shooter of the management. Given the proximity of the day to day interaction with all the personnel.
Module V- EVALUATION AND EXAMINATION (6 HRS)
